Solus Counseling LLC Disclosure Statement
Our Approach
At Solus Counseling LLC, our approach is compassionate, Scriptural, and Christ-centered. We strive to provide quality care based on these distinctives:
-
We affirm the unique authority of Scripture, and that it yields faithful, fresh, and timely wisdom for the troubles of life. We believe that, as we look more closely at life, it becomes clearer and clearer that Scripture is about counseling: diagnostic categories, causal explanations of behavior and emotion, interpretation of external sufferings and influences, definitions of workable solutions, character of the counselor, goals for the counseling process, etc. These are all matters to which God speaks directly, specifically, and frequently. We also take into account the central, biblical narrative in God’s Word, exploring how our story can be found in His story.
-
We believe that people are complex. We are affected by our own bodies, other people, culture, work, spiritual life, and much more. We acknowledge that Christian counselors who rely on the Bible are not the only ones who seek to understand and help others, and that there are many other helpful, compassionate voices out there that we can learn from, and we want to interpret it all through the lens of Scripture.
-
We believe that Christ-likeness is central to our wellness and human flourishing. We also understand that this journey towards Christ-likeness is a path, not a script. There is no formula or easily predictable outcomes. We therefore want to approach each person with humility and constant reliance on God, the wisdom of others, and input from those we help.
Our Counselor
John Kim, our counselor, is trained and educated in Scriptural, Christ-centered, pastoral counseling. He will use the Scriptures compassionately to encourage, comfort, understand, and guide clients to grow and mature into Christ-likeness. He is not working under licensure in the state of Georgia but under licensure exception Georgia Code 43-10A-7 (11). He is not able to provide clinical diagnoses.

Solus Counseling LLC provides individual, couples, and clergy counseling. Counseling is provided in-person or online.
Statement of Confidentiality
We want to assure you that the counseling provided will adhere to strict confidentiality standards, and we will make every effort to protect your confidentiality. While most communication between a client and counselor is confidential, the following limitations and exceptions do exist:
-
With written consent: A client may request that specific information be sent to another individual. Prior to disclosure, the client must sign a “Consent for Release of Information”. Information will not be released for reasons unrelated to treatment. In the event that the client is a relationship rather than an individual, written consent must be obtained by all parties in the relationship prior to release of information.
-
Without written consent: Disclosure of self-harm, demonstration of high risk of self-harm, a risk of harm to someone else, a disclosure of abuse (such as child abuse, elder or dependent adult abuse, or spousal abuse); a disclosure required by a subpoena or other court ordered from a federal, state, or local agency or court; any other disclosure required by federal, state, or local law; there are times during marriage counseling when individual sessions will be recommended, and during individual sessions, there will be no confidentiality guaranteed from one another (i.e. no secrets held between the counselor and a client); the client is a minor and the counselor believes it is in the best interest of the child to disclose information to the parent, the client discloses a situation that may question the biblical qualification of an elder or deacon at New Church of Atlanta; times when it may be recommended for pastors and elders of NCA to help develop the best possible plan moving forward, and only certain aspects will be shared in such instances to best serve the client while revealing as little as possible about the clients’ identifies; for members of NCA, consistent with our membership vows, trusted and compassionate church leaders may be asked to assist in a case where further accountability is needed.
Email and Phone Consultations
Rev. Kim will be available for minimal interaction over email and phone. Such correspondences should be kept to a minimum and will not address sensitive information.
Potential Counseling Risks
It is important to understand that counseling often results in the client experiencing uncomfortable emotions or thoughts. It is possible that additional issues, other than the ones you originally presented, may surface. Your experience in counseling may affect your relationships with others, such as family members. It is also important to remember that finding hope and healing is usually a long term process.
Emergencies
Solus Counseling LLC does not provide 24-hour emergency crisis counseling. If you are in an emergency situation, please call 911 or visit the nearest emergency room.
